FSSAI Registration Process in India
Application Filing
The process begins with filing the FSSAI application through the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) portal. The applicant must provide accurate details about the food business, such as business name, address, type of activity (manufacturing, trading, storage, distribution, etc.), and turnover. Submitting the correct form (Form A for Basic Registration and Form B for State/Central License) ensures smooth processing.Documentation Review
Once the application is submitted, authorities review the attached documents to verify their authenticity and compliance. Common documents include proof of identity, proof of business premises, food safety management plan, and other licenses (if applicable). Any missing or invalid documents can delay approval, so ensuring completeness at this stage is crucial.Inspection (if needed)
In certain cases, the Food Safety Officer (FSO) may conduct an inspection of the premises before granting approval. The inspection focuses on hygiene, safety standards, storage practices, and compliance with FSSAI guidelines. This step is more common in State and Central licenses compared to Basic registration.Clarifications & Corrections
If discrepancies, missing information, or errors are found, the authorities will issue a clarification request. The applicant must provide corrections or additional documents within the given timeline. Failure to comply can lead to application rejection. Properly addressing clarifications ensures faster license issuance.License Issuance
After successful verification and inspection, the FSSAI License/Registration certificate is issued. Every licensed food business receives a 14-digit FSSAI number which must be printed on all packaged food products. This number acts as a unique identification and proof of compliance with food safety standards.Renewals & Compliance
An FSSAI license is valid for 1 to 5 years, depending on the applicant’s choice at the time of registration. Businesses must apply for renewal before the expiry date to avoid penalties. Additionally, annual return filing is mandatory for manufacturers and importers, ensuring continued compliance. Maintaining hygiene, safety records, and regular audits helps businesses remain compliant with FSSAI norms.
